Oh.... Christmas Tree.

It is 8:56 am and I've already had a bad day.

Alright, I'll cut the theatrics. You've all seen a movie/television show where the first scene is someone in the operating room and then it flashes to another scene as "3 days earlier" pops up on the screen. So consider, "It is 8:56 am and I've already had a bad day" my operating room and now we'll back up to Sunday when all was good and right with the world....

3 days earlier (Sunday)...
Michael and I picked out our Christmas tree! Sunday was one of the only days we were both free so we borrowed his dad's truck and made our way through the slight drizzle to find a tree for our home. Struck out at the first three places and then found her. She's quite the beaut. This is our first Christmas in our present home so we hadn't a clue where to put it. There wasn't much space in the newly decorated living room and neither of us wanted to lug a 9' Christmas tree upstairs. And so we picked the only logical place: our kitchen. Before you judge, please understand that we have a pretty large spot for a kitchen table we do not own. And we are both enormous fans of the Christmas tree so we wanted it to be highly visible. Seeing that we both have a great love for food, the kitchen only made sense. And up it went!

We are a great team when it comes to decorating for Christmas. And I don't mean that in the cue Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" with cute couple wearing matching Christmas sweaters, laughing and holding hands while they decorate the tree kind of way. No I mean we both have our strengths and our weaknesses. Bless his heart, Michael has no idea how to put lights on a tree. In his defense he might do a fine job, but us Besancons like our tree to be a beacon in the night for not only our street, but also the surrounding states (or in our case, Mexico). The first time I saw him flippantly drape lights on the tree I immediately gave him the job of separating the strands and checking for burnouts. Then it came time to put ornaments on the tree and I apparently stink at that. I would find a great spot for my ornament only to walk around two minutes later and see it had moved elsewhere. After my darling husband finally pointed at one of my selected spots and laughed, I gave it up and started taking the ornaments out of their boxes and let him do the rest. Like I said, great team. :)

Whew, this is getting long. Let's see if I can turn this into a 5-paragraph essay that'd make my senior English teacher proud. Last two days have been great, and then we woke up this morning at exactly 2:02 to a very, very, very, (VERY) loud crash. We both jumped out of bed as I thought, "Oh no, our skylight broke!" (This is the second time I've woken up thinking our small skylight broke and neither of us can figure out why.) Michael knew exactly what it was and quietly said, "Christmas tree." We made it to the kitchen and sure enough, one very large Christmas tree was now horizontal. The loud crash came from approx 15 ornaments that were now shattered on our floor.

Oh.

(And there goes my 5-paragraph essay). We spent the next 45 minutes cleaning up the water, the ornaments, and our broken spirits. It was a sad sight. We've come to the conclusion that we've outgrown our Christmas tree stand so we're off to find a new one today. We lost a lot of good men (er, ornaments) last night and it was quite the tragedy.

So now you understand why it's so early and I've already labeled it a bad day. I guess "sad" is a better word for it. Throw in the snow on our rooftops and I'm looking at a Christmas disaster. I moved to this great state with the high hopes I'd never see that crap again. :)

Our tree when it was doing as it was told...

The Christmas cat!

Dining table

:)

Our only Christmas decoration in the living room--ha!

This is the view when you walk through our front door. See? A Christmas tree in the kitchen is kind of cool, right?

The stockings were hung on the wine buffet with care...

My parents were given these apothecary jars as a wedding gift almost 40 years ago. Aren't they awesome?

Our few decorations upstairs.
And to all a good night....
(Especially us, we are both very tired this morning.)

Oh no!! That's a funny/sad little story all in one...the tree sure looked pretty though! (if it makes you feel better, I pulled our tree down when I was about 5...all b/c I was playing with the ornaments :)

Boo :( I thought that maybe you were going to say that Thumbs was messing around with the tree and that's why it fell, so at least you have a well behaved cat. And I like his photo on the stairs :) And I love the ornaments hanging from the mirror. And the tree was really pretty before it fell! AND I love that you can see it right when you walk in the door! And! And! And!

Lee and I also make very good partners when it comes to decorating for Christmas. I do all the decorating and he lays on the couch and watches football :)

I'm totally jealous that you already got your Tree! I won't have a chance to do mine until after finals. Sad times that the tree fell. I would have cried.

Aww your tree looked pretty when it was upright! And I love it in the kitchen! Good idea and good rationalization how ya'll got there.. haha! :) Cute idea to put the ornaments on those hooks/coat rack. :) you make me want a house so badly!! Decorating my little apt alone is no fun. Eric said we could decorate his house..but then he gets to enjoy it whilst he studies for the CPA and I sit at home. No thanks. Hmph! :) Hope your day gets better (and glad it was the tree, not the skylight);)

sorry to hear about your tree and your bad day but your house looks awesome! I love your creative ideas. My husband was at work when I put our (fake) tree up. I am anal and I like it done my way. He likes it that way too. haha!

I'm sorry about your tree, but it does look lovely down the hall. And those apothecary jars are really awesome!

Every single decoration in your house is GORGEOUS. So so so sorry about your smashed ornaments. I can sympathize on a small scale: this year I broke an ornament from the first Christmas that Nick and I were married.

I cried. Which made Ella cry. Which made Kate cry.

Nick just sat there looking dazed. Poor guy is SURROUNDED by emotions and estrogen. :)

I, too, used to move the ornaments after you put them on the tree. I just waited until you went to bed. I'm sorry, but I am also very picky about how each ornament hangs on those delicate limbs. And now my heart aches for the fallen tree and the broken ornaments. :(
So sad, but you and Michael will come up with something better! You always pull through!

I find it fitting that your family's Christmas tree is a beacon in the night for most of the southern U.S., because you can't spell Besancon without beacon. B-e-(s)-a-(n)-c-o-n. Just putting it out there. :)
