Is That A Butterfly In The Sky?

Let's get this party started, shall we?

Growing up, did you ever buy a cd (or cassette, I'm not judging) and listen to the entire thing, only to find a certain song that you really loved? To take it one step further, that song you loved... no one else really knew about it. It didn't immediately become a hit, it wasn't played on every radio station, it was simply your secret. And then, that dreadful day came. The day you woke up to it playing on the radio, and suddenly... suddenly it became mainstream and your secret was exposed to millions of greedy listeners. Maybe it's just me (and I'm quite confident I'm being a little extreme with this), but what a terrible feeling.

I feel the same way about great books that turn into movies. One of my very favorite books hits theaters today and I'm not going to lie, a part of me is crushed. The Time Traveler's Wife. I wish I could describe to you the brilliance of this book. I have a problem with getting so involved in a storyline that I dread reading the last chapter because I know my connection with the characters is about to break. This book was no exception. Oh how I adored it. And now I'm terrified of it becoming "just another movie," because folks, it is definitely not "just another book." So plea #1: Read this book. By all means, go see the movie as well, but read it.

Along the same lines, please allow me to mention one other book: Love Walked In. After I finished it, my immediate thought was to turn to chapter 1 and read it all over again (sidenote: I have now read it 3 times, though not in immediate succession). The characters are so real, the writing is brilliant, and I have never felt such a close connection to any storyline. I'm telling you now because I believe they are making this jewel into a movie as well and my treasured secret just might become a red carpet success. So! I'd rather share this book with you now so you'll understand my ridiculous love affair with a work of fiction.

I red Time Travelers Wife 2 weeks ago and I loved it. My favorite book!!

I am excited though to see the movie (I am going tonight) because I love Rachael McAdams.

I hear you though about movies ruining books. Hopefully the movie can live up to the book!

Oh I feel you on the books to movies. Sometimes they do them justice and sometimes it does a 500mph nosedive into the pavement.

I love books. Just read The Time Traveler's Wife and I hope the movis brings out what I felt when I read it. (usually doubtful)

My husband refuses to read any books that have been made into movies. But once we watch it he has a million questions that the movie never told but the book did. Annoying. READ THE BOOK!

PS.
I hate it when my fav (secret) song becomes mainstream. Anything mainstream is doomed to being overplayed, thus no longer cool to me. I always wind up heartbroken.

Thanks for the book suggestion. I just bought My Sister's Keeper to read it before I see the movie... I was disappointed to hear all these books being made into movies too, but mainly because I think it's sad that no one reads anymore, they just can watch the movie.

You're right about TTW. I read it back when we lived in Tulsa (could that really be FIVE YEARS ago?!) and told my parents about it. Mom and Dad told me last month that it was going to be a movie, and I was crushed. I felt the same way the first time I heard John Mayer on the radio. I felt like he had been MY SECRET for two years and then he totally betrayed me. :) Glad to know I'm not the only one who takes things like that very seriously.

I will read LWI immediately. Yessssss. I love a good book!

Have you read Marisa de los Santos second book, Belong to Me? If you think Love walked in was incredible, you need to read Belong to Me. I read Belong to Me first, which is kinda a sequel to Love walked in, and then read Love walked in later and although both were great, I think Belong to me is even better than Love walked in. Let me know what you think. I just requested Time Traveler's Wife from the library!
