19 Weeks - Halfway There!

While I would never describe this pregnancy as "flying by," I can't wrap my head around the fact we're halfway there and will be meeting our babies in a little over four months!  This is assuming they stay put until week 38, which is fairly uncommon with twin pregnancies as most arrive early. My brother and I were both late so I'm hoping the tradition continues. We were also 9 and 10 pounds respectively and the very thought of 19 pounds of babies makes me die a little inside.

Not much has changed since the last post: the stomach continues to grow, the round ligament pain continues to annoy, and the energy continues to increase.  While I considered myself blessed with an easy(ish) first trimester, the second trimester has been downright FUN!

Speaking of the stomach, I am now the size where strangers feel completely confident asking me when I'm due.  I had a rough experience this past weekend that I will share only because of its all-around ridiculousness.  We were standing in line at Potbelly's (a good name for my current condition) and a woman asked me how far along I was.  I told her 19 weeks and she introduced me to her one-month-old daughter.  We chatted briefly and that was that.  I left the line so I could save us a table and she approached me again, this time asking if this was my first baby. I told her yes and that we were actually expecting two and she said (I'm paraphrasing), "TWINS!  I thought so due to your size!  When you told me you were only 19 weeks along I almost asked but thought 'That would be SO RUDE if she's not expecting twins!' so I didn't say anything.  But you definitely look like you're having more than one."

Crickets.

I put on my best smile and felt my eyes well up with tears.  And I hated myself for it because HELL YES I'm having twins and until she opened her mouth I'd been very happy and proud of my stomach.  But alas, I'm still a girl (a very hormonal girl) and hearing that I looked huge was unsettling.  Later that day I shared the story with my mom and she politely (but firmly) told me to grow some thicker skin and be grateful.  She's right, of course, and I'm once again quite proud of my burgeoning belly and its adorable occupants.

(But come on, was her outburst truly necessary?  Sheesh.)

The truly wonderful part of this past weekend was a visit from my best friend Kaitlin and her family!   It was so good to see them and we had an absolute blast with Leighton.  We spent the weekend swimming (Leighton is a fish!), shopping, eating, and relaxing around the house.  Michael and I asked lots of parenting questions, which I know will continue for the next 18+ years.  Such a great little family and we were both so sad to see them leave.  We might have had L withdrawals the rest of the day.

You look gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! Your stomach is the PERFECT size for those babies! When I was pregnant with Jackson, a lady at work would constantly ask me "Are you sure there aren't TWO in there?!" For some reason, people don't know how to say the right thing to pregnant women.
Seriously and honestly, you look PRECIOUS!

Oh my gosh, I am fuming! Partially because I can't get over the nerve of that girl (especially since she had JUST been in your shoes...doesn't she remember that any comment about your size when pregnant is no good, no matter what???), but mostly because to me you don't look like you're pregnant with twins...you just look like a gorgeous, all-belly, normal sized pregnant lady! Ugh...I'm going to go hang out at Potbellys and wait for that girl to come back so I can give her a piece of my mind! :)

I have lots of friends who frequently were asked if they were carrying twins, and they were only pregnant with one! That would feel so much worse, right? The way I see it, you are actually carrying two babies, so if someone thinks you look bigger than carring one baby, you are! You HAVE to be bigger! But for the record, I don't think you look bigger than normal AT ALL. I definitely wouldn't even suspect that you had two babies in there. I do think it's annoying how it is all of a sudden ok to comment on a person's size when they are pregnant...whether it is to say they are huge or way too tiny to be that far along.

Anyways, as a huge, about to pop pregnant and hormonal person, I shouldn't climbing up onto any soap boxes :) Glad you're feeling so great!

You look great and people suck! I had someone tell me "Wow, you're ankles aren't even that swollen!" This was after I had convinced myself that they weren't, in fact, swollen. And maxi dresses and skirts are the greatest things ever for summer!

Welcome to parenthood - where you'll hear the most ridiculous, unsolicited comments ever! A woman at our church tells me every Sunday, without fail, how tired I look. Sometimes, it's really emphatic: "You look exhausted, EXHAUSTED." Gee, thanks! I think I even put eyeliner on specifically *for her* that morning to avoid the comment, to no avail.

You look adorable!!

You look great!! I think it's so difficult to judge because regardless of twins everyone carries differently and looks different and... I remember getting the shocked looks in the elevator when I explained how far along I was (third trimester) and it does hurt a bit BUT...I guess it's all relative.

I'm so glad you're enjoying the second tri so much! It really is the best.

I do not know what that lady was thinking? People are so rude, I've got the same reaction as Jenny...are they're two in their? Or they begin to tell me about their awful experience of having a miscarriage-seriously? Anyway, ignore those crazy people...trust us, you look AMAZING! I think I am bigger than you and there is one! :)

First of all, you look beautiful. Seriously, you are all belly. And honestly, I don't think you look that big for 19 weeks? Maybe it's just me. I love pregnant bellies though. Not to be creepy :) I just can't believe that people still say things like that these days. I would never ever tell someone that I thought they looked bigger, or even smaller, for that matter, than however many weeks they were. I feel like we need to be encouraging to each other, especially during pregnancy because we all know how emotional that time is! Enjoy your belly, mama. You're growing two big, healthy, beautiful babies in there!

WOW! People. I read everyone's comments as well and also experienced the same types of comments when I was pregnant. You seriously look so gorgeous and you are glowing! Happy halfway point!
